Sydney-born with over thirty years experience
Dr James Thompson
Dr James Thompson BVSc (U Syd), MANZCVS (Surgery), MVS (Murdoch)
Veterinarian
James grew up in Pymble attending Pymble Public School, then Knox Grammar. After graduation from the University of Sydney in 1992, he worked in country practice in England, Wales, and Scone (NSW) then at North Shore Veterinary Hospital. He has completed distance education courses in Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine and attended orthopedic training conferences in Davos, Switzerland and Sydney. James completed his Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Surgery in 2004 and has assisted teaching surgery to vet students at the University of Sydney.
In June 2012 the Centre for Veterinary Education of the University of Sydney published Dr Thompson’s article discussing the successful surgical treatment of abdominal masses in four dogs, awarding the paper a major prize. James completed his Masters in Veterinary Clinical Studies from Murdoch University in June 2014. He has volunteered on animal welfare programs in Indonesia and Africa, served on the Executive Committee of the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association from 2014-17, and as a Director of Northside After Hours Emergency Vet Service (NEVS) from 2014-2020.
James and his wife Gretta are happy parents of 2 little boys, who attend local kindergartens 2 days a week. James is currently managing a mix of being a “new age dad”, plus the transition to the new expanded hospital, with limited availability for consultations by appointment. After an extended family winter road trip before the boys start school to the red centre, Kimberleys and Northern Territory “top end”, James intends to resume full clinical practice in late 2020.
In his limited spare time James trains for half marathons with CanToo, tries to fit in a surf or ocean swim, or chills out to Peppa Pig or Daniel Tiger’s Neighbourhood on TV.
Part of the Local Area for Generations
James and his forebears have been part of the North Shore area of Sydney for generations.
